3D tattooing has become so popular over the past year or so because it really takes the world of tattooing to a whole new level. Just like when colored ink was first introduced and everyone was getting color added to their new design or even to an old design, the newest trend is for sure 3D tattooing! Whether you’re looking for a way to have a tattoo that stands out amongst the rest, maybe you’ll looking to get a chest or back piece but you want more of a way for it to stand out in more than just adding colors or an interesting design to keep the tattoo tied in together, a 3D will make a great center piece for any type of design you’re looking for. If you’re doing a bouquet of flowers, have one or two of the floors in 3D while the others are just there to compliment everything together. Maybe you’re getting a chest piece but not sure what to have in the middle, what about a 3D heart so it looks like your heart is jumping off of your skin. There’s so much you can do with these great designs that you’ll wonder why you waited so long for a 3D design!

Check out these amazing and unique designs below, you’ll be left wondering if these are even tattoos! 3D adds more than depth, more than a great trend, but 3D tattoos are a great way to add your creative side and have people questioning if it’s a real tattoo or something you had designed. These types of tattoos are the most creative because think about it, who doesn’t want to have some sort of life like looking design jumping off of their skin?!Here is a next natural form of body modification, a 3D printed tattoo. Maria, a 23 year old girl from the Netherlands, printed her skin with a design made from stem cells. For her, two diagonal lines mean rebellion and one horizontal line means peace. For Maria, these three ambivalent lines represent the state of utopia.

During the London International Tattoo Convention, I interviewed Dr. De Jong who performed the operation. He was a tattoo artist until his 30s and has been trying to find a new form of self expression. He confidently said “Tattoo is a very ancient form of fashion and we need to use a new means to express ourselves. I am sure this 3D printed tattoo will soon be fashionable in Amsterdam and Tokyo and will spread across the world”.

This story is actually a fiction; the photo is from Ted Partin’s book Eyes Look Through You. But perhaps it is not entirely a fiction, but a fictional reality. Think about Stelarc’s Ear on Arm, or 3D printing technology branching out to bone, organs and skin. People already do astonishing things with their bodies. Why not 3D-printed modifications?
The tattoo artist must have must have advanced knowledge of anatomy, because these tattoos mimic the contours of muscles and bones, following the human musculoskeletal system. The point of these tattoos is to appear natural or even possible, to be believable and realistic (they don't need to be actually plausible, but must appear so). Because of this, placement is an essential component of these tattoos. The tattoo must be placed over the correct joints and muscles in order to look as believable as possible. Furthermore, the tattooer must be able to blend the tattoo into the normal, un-tattooed skin. If the tattoo looks like a sticker or out of place then the entire effect is ruined, even if the actual tattoo is nicely executed. These tattoos are only successful when they appear to trick the eye, known as a trompe l'oeil in artistic terms.

Word Tattoos have become popular almost overnight. There isn’t one single word that doesn’t look good tattooed. There’s so many different fonts that you can get your tattoo in and that only opens up the door even more to how unique you can design your word tattoo. Whether you’re getting a single word or a group of words, you want a font that compliments the saying well. If you want to make a statement with getting someones name tattooed on you, you want a nice maybe cursive font. If you’re getting “ROCK” tattooed over your knuckles you’d want something more bold, something that really makes a statement. Same goes with colors. You can add colors to just about word, even if it’s just a shadow or maybe you use color in a specific letter of the tattoo, either way colors are optional and sometimes black ink tattoos make more of a statement. Word tattoos are a way that you can showcase something that means most to you, why not have the way it’s tattooed be exactly what you want?
